Teach typing and follow progress

Build comfortable keyboard skills through accurate practice. See speed, accuracy and progress without races or rewards.

Create typing assignment

Your first lesson

  1. Choose Typing Skills → Create typing assignment.
  2. Choose Elementary, Middle school or High school passages and a typing skill. Preview the passages before saving.
  3. Start with two minutes of Typing Practice. Set an accuracy goal; a speed target is optional.
  4. Open the lobby. Students join using the classroom code. Choose Start typing when everyone is ready.
  5. Open Typing Skills → Progress reports to review received results and export a report.

Try short, regular sessions rather than occasional long ones. The pilot's durations and advancement thresholds are adjustable product defaults, not established age norms.

Choose the activity

Typing Practice: immediate mismatch highlighting and live estimates. Students can correct mistakes or continue. The teacher-selected skill stays fixed.

Typing Check: no hints or live scores; results appear at the end. Use the same settings to compare checks. Interrupted checks are excluded from comparable growth.

In both: Press Enter for the next passage, even with mistakes. The timer runs continuously and results send automatically. Two minutes is the default.

Reading and typing are different

Choose a school-level passage band and a separate keyboard skill. Better typing should not force a young student into unsuitable reading.

The bank uses excerpts from 12 familiar American public-domain works, including The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Raggedy Ann Stories, Little Women, Tom Sawyer, The Great Gatsby and Walden. Elementary passages are short; high-school paragraphs are longer. The Writer measures the text at its larger font size and selects an excerpt that fits without scrolling. The texts are installed locally on the Vero device; only settings and aggregate results transfer. Practice avoids recently used passages on that student’s current device. Skill checks retain a fixed order for comparison.

Reading bands are provisional editorial estimates, not verified Lexile measures. Teachers should preview vocabulary and historical context. Word drills are explicitly derived from excerpts; key-location drills are not literary reading.

Understand the report

Correct WPM: five correctly copied characters count as one word. Spaces and punctuation count. Thinking time and corrections remain in the elapsed assessment time.

Text accuracy: how closely the entered text matches the attempted passage. Backspace is allowed; corrections improve text accuracy, but take time. Correction actions are also recorded. This is not first-keystroke accuracy. There is no autocorrect, prediction or spelling advice.

Practice time: recorded exercise time, including normal hesitation. It is not proof of attention. Pauses are excluded.

Growth: compares Typing Checks with matching forms and conditions. The current score uses the latest three comparable checks when available; fewer checks are provisional. Practice scores remain visible separately.

Start with a class to see its summary and student roster, then choose Print class report. For an individual report, select Individual student, search across your classes and choose the student. Set a date range if needed. Print student report opens a report-only layout; CSV includes all selected records. Results appear after the collecting computer syncs; missing offline results are not zero practice.

Age percentiles and difficulty-adjusted speed are not available until suitable reference data and calibration exist. Teacher targets are expectations, not population averages.

Support individual learners

Use larger text, a comfortable keyboard position, and an appropriate duration. Adjust reading support independently of age and typing skill. Record changed input or accommodation conditions so reports do not mix incompatible checks. Keyboard controls and touch are both supported; the app does not assess posture or require a particular hand configuration.

Why this approach? Research and pilot limits

These studies inform the design; they do not demonstrate that Vero itself produces learning gains. The bank has 100 practice excerpts and 20 separate check excerpts per school band. Skill-check forms have not been empirically equated.
