Show the reasoning

Use writing to explain how an answer makes sense.

Create explain your thinking

Set up

  1. In Create assignment, choose Explain Your Thinking, then Use the sample assignment.
  2. Edit the prompt, purpose, audience and supports. Review checklist and Personal reflection start on; use their toggles to turn either off. With both off, students can use Task → Plan → Write. Check any source text and its origin/context. Start without a timer or word limit for practice.
  3. Preview, Save assignment, and look for Assignment saved. Open it for a class, open the lobby, then Start writing.

Use short explanations, worked reasoning or a claim with a check. Writing uses plain text; this release adds no calculator, equation editor or automatic grading.

Use the sample

Compare two discounts

Audience: A classmate learning the same idea.

A notebook costs $20. Shop A takes $5 off. Shop B takes 20% off. Which shop has the lower price? Explain how you know, check your result, and explain why the same shop would not always be cheaper for every starting price. Write your reasoning in words; no calculator or equation editor is provided.

Planning prompts
  • What is your answer or claim?
  • What steps or ideas lead to it?
  • What example checks your reasoning?
  • What mistake might a reader make?

Teach and review

Let students solve the problem. Model an explanation on a different example. Ask a partner to identify why each step works; students then improve their written explanation.

  • I give a clear answer.
  • I explain why the steps work, not just list them.
  • I use an example to check my reasoning.
  • I explain a possible mistake or limitation.

Feedback: Name one strength and one specific next step. Have students explain a change before submitting. Checkboxes are self-reports, not scores.

Short model and student example

Teacher think-aloud: I will explain what the percentage is a percentage of. Listing calculations alone does not tell a reader why the answer makes sense.

Illustrative student writing: At Shop A the price is $15. At Shop B, 20% of $20 is $4, so the price is $16. Shop A is cheaper for this notebook. For a $40 item, 20% is $8, so Shop B would give a bigger discount.

Reflection: I checked another starting price because a fixed discount and a percentage do not change in the same way.

Original teaching examples, not actual student work or officially scored exemplars. Use a different modeling topic when students should generate their own answer.

Adjust support and use it beyond this lesson

Discuss ideas aloud, reduce the review criteria or provide a teacher example for more support. Remove optional planning for greater independence. Adapt vocabulary and source demands for other grades and retain accommodations.

This routine supports clear explanations, informed decisions and thoughtful revision in school and everyday communication. Use official assessment samples to compare task demands; this activity is not an official test or an endorsement.

Standards and evidence

W.8.2.b, d: use examples and precise language; W.8.4: explain to a defined reader. This is not a full mathematics standards mapping. See the official grade 8 writing standards. Alignment describes practice opportunities, not mastery. Other grades and discipline-specific tasks need their own mapping.

A meta-analysis connects writing-to-learn activities with learning in science, social studies and mathematics. The instructional activity—not a Vero feature—is the studied intervention. Read the study or guidance.

WWC’s model–practice–reflect guidance supports the teacher demonstration and student review routine. Vero makes these practices ready to use; research outcomes belong to the teaching approaches studied, not to Vero.

Timing, saving and downloads

One timer covers every stage. Use Pause for a break, not End session. Only the final response counts toward word limits. Draft/notes, review checks and reflection save separately and accompany the submission. Sources are reference text, not student words.

PDF, DOCX and TXT label supporting work separately; including prompts also includes source documents. The original .vero keeps the structured package. Wait for Submission received on the Vero device and portal. Assignment edits apply to new sessions.
